Photovoltaic module manufacturers use up to date technologies to make their modules as self-cleaning as possible. However, angle of installation, characteristics of surrounding areas, and common pollution work continuously against it. The reduction of energy production due to soiling is NOT the only reason of why you should clean your solar modules. Allowing dirt to build up over time is what matters, as it increases the erosion of the protective coating of the modules, permanently reducing its transparency. It also allows the formation of "hot spots", which damage the internal cells.
